Marshall Welch

Independent Scholar
Portland, Oregon
Marshall Welch has a long history in the field of service-learning and community engagement as practitioner-scholar. He has written and presented extensively on service-learning, reflection, institutionalization of community engagement, and the spirituality of service-learning. Marshall worked with John Saltmarsh to create the inventory described in this presentation and together they have facilitated two successful strategic planning retreats. This work culminated in one widely read journal article, one book chapter, and served as the foundation for a newly published book, Engaging Higher Education: Purpose, Platforms, and Programs authored by the presenter. He is on the Executive Board for the International Association for Research on Service-learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE) and hosted the third annual research conference of that group in 2003. He also played a key role in establishing the first summer institute for campus center directors sponsored by national Campus Compact and hosted the first institute at the University of Utah in 2004. Marshall served as the Director of the Bennion Center at the University of Utah from 2001 to 2007 until he became the Director of the Catholic Institute for Lasallian Social Action (CILSA) at Saint Mary’s College of California in 2007 and later to take the role of Assistant Vice Provost for Engagement. He is currently the co-author with Dr. Lina Dostilio on a book project sponsored by Campus Compact focused on competencies for community engagement professionals. He is now an independent scholar living and working in the Portland, Oregon area.
